Belief in One God Alone Is Not Sufficient to Enter Islam

Belief in the existence of one God alone is not sufficient for a person to enter Islam. One must also believe in the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ and submit to Islam. Therefore, if a Christian dies without embracing Islam, he is not considered a Muslim, and it is not permissible to supplicate for his forgiveness or seek Allah's mercy for him after his death. However, while he is still alive, Muslims should sincerely strive to invite him to Islam.

Is Belief in One God Alone Enough to Enter Islam?

The answer is: No.

Islam is not established merely by believing in the existence of one God. Rather, it requires:

• Bearing witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
• Bearing witness that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.
• Believing in the message of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and submitting to it.
• Rejecting all religions that contradict Islam.

For this reason, many of the People of the Book believed in Allah's existence, yet they were not considered Muslims because they did not believe in the message of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

How Does a Christian Enter Islam?

If a Christian wishes to embrace Islam, he must sincerely testify:

"I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

This testimony must be made with genuine faith, acceptance, submission, and commitment—not merely as an intellectual acknowledgment or a statement of fact.

Simply recognizing that Islam is true or that Muhammad ﷺ is Allah's Messenger is not sufficient unless it is accompanied by sincere acceptance and submission to Allah.

Will Belief in Allah Alone Benefit Someone Without Accepting Islam?

Whoever believes in Allah but rejects—or refuses to accept—the message of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ after it has reached him is not considered a Muslim merely because he affirms Allah's existence or His Oneness.

This is because Allah has commanded belief in all His Messengers, and the final message was completed through Muhammad ﷺ.

Is It Permissible to Pray for His Forgiveness After His Death?

If a person dies as a Christian without embracing Islam, it is not permissible to supplicate for Allah's forgiveness or mercy for him after his death.

Allah says:

"It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives..."
(Qur'an 9:113)

However, while such a person is still alive, it is permissible and recommended to pray that Allah guides him, opens his heart to Islam, and leads him to the truth.

What Is Our Duty Toward a Non-Muslim Relative?

If a non-Muslim relative is still alive, the Muslim should:

• Invite him to Islam with wisdom and kindness.
• Explain the true meaning of Tawhid and the message of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
• Pray for his guidance.
• Make every reasonable effort to help him embrace Islam before death.
