For a long time, beliefs have spread linking the phases of the moon to many human conditions, such as violent behavior, psychological disturbances, epileptic seizures, childbirth, female fertility, and the chances of becoming pregnant.
Various studies have attempted to investigate these issues. Some earlier researchers suggested that there might be a relationship between them and the phases of the moon. However, broader and more accurate reviews and studies have not established a consistent scientific relationship that can be relied upon.
A number of researchers have reviewed studies examining the relationship between the full moon and unusual behavior, psychological disorders, crime, and other phenomena.
They found that the results claiming such a relationship were inconsistent, and that some studies had problems in their research methods and analysis.
Scientific reviews have also indicated that there is no consistent relationship between the phases of the moon and several phenomena that have been attributed to them, such as:
Therefore, the belief that the full moon itself causes changes in people’s behavior or increases these conditions is not supported by established scientific evidence.
Claims have also spread that the chances of pregnancy increase during certain phases of the moon, or that the lunar phase at the time of conception can influence the sex of the baby.
Some older studies suggested possibilities of this kind, but more recent and larger studies have not confirmed them.
One study examined data from more than 500,000 births and found no significant relationship between the timing of childbirth and the phases of the lunar cycle.
Accordingly, it is not scientifically valid to rely on the phases of the moon to determine female fertility, the best time to become pregnant, the sex of the baby, or the timing of childbirth.
One reason this idea persists is that people may remember unusual events that happen during a full moon and then associate the two, while overlooking the many other days when the moon is visible and nothing unusual occurs.
The mere occurrence of two events at the same time does not mean that one caused the other. Scientific evidence is needed to establish such a relationship.
There is no established scientific evidence showing that the phases of the moon or the full moon control human behavior, female fertility, pregnancy, the sex of the baby, or the timing of childbirth.
Therefore, medical decisions related to pregnancy and fertility should not be based on lunar phases. They should instead rely on recognized medical factors, examinations, and proper medical evaluation.
