Shirk and Its Danger

Lesson 11

The Meaning and Danger of Shirk

Peace be upon you, dear brothers. I hope you are doing well.

Today, Allah willing, we will talk about the meaning of Shirk and its danger.

What does Shirk mean?

Shirk means directing any act of worship to someone or something other than Allah, or associating a partner with Allah in matters that are exclusive to Him.

What is the danger of Shirk?

1- Allah does not forgive Shirk for those who die upon it without repentance

Allah Almighty says:

“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating others with Him, but He forgives anything less than that for whom He wills. And whoever associates others with Allah has certainly committed a tremendous sin.”

[An-Nisa’: 48]

This means that Allah does not forgive those who die upon Shirk without repentance. As for sins less than Shirk, they are subject to Allah’s will: He may forgive them or punish the person for them.

2- Whoever dies upon major Shirk is forbidden from entering Paradise

Allah Almighty says:

“They have certainly disbelieved who say, ‘Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary,’ while the Messiah said, ‘O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.’ Indeed, whoever associates others with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are no helpers for the wrongdoers.”

[Al-Ma’idah: 72]

This means that whoever associates partners with Allah and dies upon Shirk without repentance, Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and his abode will be the Fire.

3- Shirk is the greatest sin

Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that he asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him):

“Which sin is the greatest in the sight of Allah?”

The Prophet replied:

“To set up a rival to Allah although He created you.”

This means that the greatest sin is to associate a partner with Allah, even though Allah alone is the One who created us.

All praise is due to Allah. The lesson is complete.
