She secretly embraced Islam, but her family wants to marry her to a Christian. What should she do?

Question
A woman embraced Islam and declared the two testimonies of faith, but she has not revealed her conversion because she fears her family. Now her family is trying to force her to marry a Christian man, and they are threatening to cut ties with her if she announces her Islam. Is it permissible for her to agree to this marriage? What is she required to do according to Islamic law?
Answer

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.

Whoever sincerely pronounces the two testimonies of faith has entered Islam, even if they have not officially declared it. Such a person is required to adhere to the teachings of Islam and remain steadfast upon them.

Is it permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a Christian man?

No. It is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man, whether he is Christian or follows any other religion. The scholars have unanimously agreed that such a marriage is prohibited, and the marriage contract is not valid according to Islamic law.

Therefore, she must refuse this marriage regardless of family pressure, because obedience to Allah takes precedence over obedience to people. There is no obedience to any created being if it involves disobedience to the Creator.

Is she sinful if her family becomes angry or cuts ties with her?

If remaining steadfast in her religion causes her family to become angry, sever relations with her, or if she suffers harm because she openly declares her Islam, then she bears no sin, because she is fulfilling what Allah has made obligatory upon her.

At the same time, she should continue to honor her parents, treat them with kindness, and speak to them with wisdom and gentleness, as long as doing so does not lead her to disobey Allah.

Must she officially declare her Islam?

If the laws and procedures in her country allow her to officially register her conversion to Islam, and doing so will help protect her religion and legal rights and prevent her from being forced into a prohibited marriage, then she should take that step. She should also seek help from trustworthy scholars, experienced people, and reliable organizations that can assist her in protecting both her faith and her safety.

Summary

Whoever truly embraces Islam is a Muslim, even if they have not officially declared their conversion. A Muslim woman is not permitted to marry a non-Muslim man under any circumstances, regardless of family pressure. She must remain steadfast in her religion and strive to protect her faith through all lawful means, while continuing to show kindness to her family and patiently enduring any hardship she faces for the sake of obeying Allah.

We ask Allah to keep her firm upon Islam, to open the hearts of her family to the truth, and to make her affairs easy.

And Allah knows best.
