Remembrance of Allah: Its Virtues and Best Forms

???????? English

Level 2

Lesson 1️⃣4️⃣: Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr)

Assalamu Alaikum, dear brothers ☺️. I hope you are doing well. Today, Insha’Allah, we will talk about the remembrance of Allah (Dhikr).

♦️ What does the remembrance of Allah mean?

Remembering Allah means glorifying Him, praising Him, exalting Him, declaring Him free from all imperfections, and thanking Him for the blessings He has bestowed upon us. Allah created jinn and mankind to worship Him alone.

 Virtues of remembering Allah:

1️⃣ Whoever remembers Allah, Allah remembers them

Allah Almighty says:

“So remember Me; I will remember you.”
[Al-Baqarah: 152]

This means that we remember Allah through obedience, worship, glorification, and other forms of Dhikr, and Allah remembers us with His favor and mercy.

2️⃣ A warning against forgetting Allah

Allah Almighty says:

“And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.”
[Al-Hashr: 19]

Therefore, a Muslim should always remember Allah and avoid being among those who are heedless of Him.

3️⃣ Remembering Allah brings tranquility to the heart

Allah Almighty says:

“Those who have believed and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.”
[Ar-Ra‘d: 28]

Remembering Allah brings tranquility and peace to the heart.

4️⃣ Seeking forgiveness is a means of receiving blessings and provision

Allah Almighty says:

“And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send rain from the sky upon you in continuing showers, and give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.’”
[Nuh: 10–12]

These verses show the virtue of seeking forgiveness and that it is among the means of receiving goodness and blessings by Allah’s permission.

The best forms of remembering Allah:

1️⃣ The Holy Qur’an

One of the best forms of Dhikr is reciting the Holy Qur’an, because it is the Word of Allah and contains remembrance, glorification, praise of Allah, and guidance for people.

Among the best forms of Dhikr is saying: “La ilaha illa Allah”

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The best supplication is the supplication on the Day of ‘Arafah, and the best that I and the Prophets before me have said is: La ilaha illa Allah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir.”

Meaning: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things.

Then come the other prescribed forms of Dhikr, such as glorifying Allah, praising Him, declaring His greatness, and seeking His forgiveness.

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Shall I tell you the words most beloved to Allah? The words most beloved to Allah are: Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Glory and praise be to Allah).”
[Muslim]

Therefore, every Muslim should frequently remember Allah in all circumstances and train their tongue to glorify and praise Allah, declare His Oneness and greatness, and seek His forgiveness.
