Why Do Many People Turn Away from the Truth Despite Its Clarity?

The Clarity of the Truth Does Not Mean That Everyone Will Accept It

Allah, the Exalted, describes the Qur'an as guidance, light, clear proof, and an explanation of all things. He made it the path to salvation from trials and misguidance. Yet, He also informed us that most people would not believe. Allah says:

"And most of the people, although you strive [for it], will not be believers."
(Qur'an 12:103)

This is one of the signs of the truthfulness of the Qur'an, as it foretold a reality that has remained constant throughout history: most people do not follow the truth simply because it is clear.

Is the Majority a Proof of the Truth?

The answer is: No.

Allah says:

"And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah."
(Qur'an 6:116)

Therefore, the truth is recognized by evidence and proof, not by the number of its followers or its popularity among people.

The Main Reasons Why People Turn Away from the Truth

1. Arrogance and Pride

One of the greatest reasons for rejecting the truth is that a person recognizes it but refuses to accept it out of arrogance or to preserve status, reputation, or personal interests.

Allah says:

"They rejected them, while their souls were convinced of them, out of ظلم (injustice) and arrogance."
(Qur'an 27:14)

2. Blindly Following Parents and Traditions

Many people cling to the beliefs of their parents and societies without examining the evidence or seeking the truth.

Allah says:

"Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our forefathers."
(Qur'an 2:170)

3. Heedlessness and Neglecting Reason

A person may possess the means to know the truth, yet fail to use them for reflection and sincere investigation.

Allah says:

"They have hearts with which they do not understand."
(Qur'an 7:179)

4. Following Doubts and Desires

Some people reject the truth because of false ideas or personal desires that prevent them from following guidance.

Allah says:

"They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire."
(Qur'an 53:23)

5. Love of This World and Preoccupation with It

Attachment to worldly life and neglect of the Hereafter are among the greatest causes of turning away from the truth.

Allah says:

"They were satisfied with the worldly life and felt secure in it."
(Qur'an 10:7)

6. Envy

Envy may prevent a person from accepting the truth when it comes through someone whose success or virtue he cannot bear.

Allah says:

"Out of envy from within themselves."
(Qur'an 2:109)

Why Doesn't Everyone Believe?

Had Allah willed, He could have made all people believers. However, He granted humanity free choice as part of the test of life. He sent messengers, revealed scriptures, and established clear proofs, then left people free to choose between guidance and misguidance.

Whoever sincerely seeks the truth, Allah guides him. But whoever knowingly turns away from it and prefers blindness over guidance is punished with abandonment and the sealing of the heart.

Conclusion

• The majority is not proof that a belief or methodology is correct.
