If the Angels Do Not Come Near the Corpse of a Disbeliever, Do They Refrain from Questioning Him in His Grave?

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.

There is no contradiction between the hadith stating that the angels do not approach the corpse of a disbeliever and the fact that the disbeliever is questioned in the grave. According to those scholars who consider the hadith authentic, it refers specifically to the angels of mercy and blessing, not to all angels.

Other narrations of the same hadith contain the wording:

"The angels do not approach them with goodness."

This wording clarifies that the intended meaning is that such people are deprived of the presence of the angels of mercy. This serves as a warning and deterrent against those conditions and actions.

As for the Angel of Death, the angels of punishment, the angels assigned to question the dead in the grave, and the recording and guardian angels, they are not included in this ruling. Every group of angels has a specific duty assigned to them by Allah, and this hadith does not prevent them from carrying out the tasks that Allah has entrusted to them.

For this reason, scholars have explained that the hadiths stating that the angels do not enter a house containing a dog or images, or that they do not approach certain individuals, refer specifically to the angels of mercy and blessing. The recording angels, guardian angels, and others do not leave a person but continue to perform the duties assigned to them.

It should also be noted that some hadith scholars considered the original narration to be weak due to a discontinuity in its chain of transmission. However, a number of scholars—including Shaykh al-Albani—graded it as hasan (acceptable). According to those who accept its authenticity, there is no difficulty in understanding it once its intended meaning is properly recognized.

Summary

The statement that the angels do not approach the corpse of a disbeliever does not mean that all angels refrain from approaching them. Rather, it refers specifically to the angels of mercy and blessing. As for the Angel of Death, the angels who question the dead in the grave, the angels of punishment, and the recording and guardian angels, they continue to perform the duties that Allah has assigned to them. Therefore, there is no contradiction between this hadith and the questioning of the disbeliever in the grave.
