Women in Islam: Created to Worship Allah and Contribute to the World, Not Merely as Objects of Desire

Question
Some women wonder: Was a woman created only to worship Allah and then to be a source of pleasure and desire for men? Was she created merely to complete a man’s life and serve him? Why do people speak so much about a woman’s beauty and body, while speaking less about her personality, character, and soul? Is motherhood the only thing that distinguishes a woman from being viewed as an object of desire?
Answer

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

First: The purpose of creating women is the same as the purpose of creating men

It is incorrect to say that women were created to provide pleasure for men or merely to satisfy their desires. This is a mistaken understanding that is not supported by the Qur’an or the Sunnah.

The fundamental purpose for which Allah created both men and women is to worship Him and fulfill their servitude to Him.

Allah says:

“I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.” [Adh-Dhariyat 51:56]

Men and women therefore share the same fundamental responsibility of worship and accountability before Allah, as well as reward for their deeds.

Second: A person’s value before Allah is not determined by the body

Islam does not make physical appearance or beauty the standard by which people are valued.

Allah says:

“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you.” [Al-Hujurat 49:13]

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah does not look at your appearance or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”

The true standard is therefore faith, righteousness, and good deeds, not appearance or beauty.

Third: A woman is a fully responsible human being

The Qur’an addresses women just as it addresses men regarding faith, worship, obedience, responsibility, and reward.

Allah says:

“Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women ... Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward.” [Al-Ahzab 33:35]

Allah also says:

“Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while being a believer, We will surely grant them a good life.” [An-Nahl 16:97]

Women, like men, are called to knowledge, worship, inviting others to good, good character, and contributing positively to society.

Fourth: Marriage in Islam is not merely about physical desire

Islam does not establish marriage on desire alone. Rather, marriage is based upon tranquility, affection, and mercy.

Allah says:

“And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy.” [Ar-Rum 30:21]

Marriage is therefore far broader than its physical dimension. It is a partnership in life based on love, mercy, and cooperation.

Fifth: Beauty is not a woman’s primary value

Beauty is a blessing from Allah, but it is not the highest standard by which a woman should be chosen or valued.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her religion. So choose the one of religion.”

Religion and good character should therefore be given priority over beauty and other qualities.

Sixth: The creation of Eve from Adam does not indicate that women are inferior

The creation of Eve from Adam, peace be upon him, does not mean that she is inferior to him in value or status. Rather, it points to the common human origin of men and women.

Allah says:

“O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord, Who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate.” [An-Nisa 4:1]

Men and women therefore share a common human origin, and each has their own responsibilities, dignity, and place as Allah has ordained.

Seventh: Motherhood is a great honor, but it is not a woman’s only value

Motherhood is one of the greatest honors and important roles of women, but it is not their only source of value.

A woman may be a scholar, a caller to goodness, a reformer, a devoted worshipper, a teacher, or someone who makes a beneficial contribution to her community. All of these are paths of goodness through which she may seek the pleasure of Allah.

Conclusion

A woman in Islam was not created merely to be a body or an instrument for a man’s pleasure. Like a man, she was created to worship Allah and contribute positively to life through faith and righteous deeds.

Beauty is one aspect of life, but it is not the measure of human worth. The true standards are righteousness, good character, and good deeds.

Marriage in Islam is based upon affection, mercy, and tranquility, not merely physical desire. A woman is a human being with full dignity, religious responsibility, and accountability before Allah.

And Allah knows best.
