Why Are the Names of Allah “Al-Wahid” and “Al-Qahhar” Paired Together in the Qur’an?

Question
The Name of Allah “Al-Wahid” — the One appears together with the Name “Al-Qahhar” — the All-Subduing in several places in the Qur’an, as in His statement: “He is Allah, the One, the All-Subduing.” What is the wisdom behind pairing these two Names? Is there a particular connection between their meanings?
Answer

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

The pairing of Allah’s Names “Al-Wahid” and “Al-Qahhar” carries a profound meaning in affirming Tawhid and the perfection of Allah’s sovereignty and power. He is One, without any partner, and He is the All-Subduing over everything besides Him. No created being can escape His authority, nor does He need any helper or partner in exercising His dominion and governing creation. Thus, the perfection of His Oneness corresponds to the perfection of His absolute dominion, and the perfection of His dominion confirms His uniqueness in sovereignty and divinity.

These two Names appear together in several places in the Qur’an, including Allah’s statement:

“Are many different lords better, or Allah, the One, the All-Subduing?”

[Yusuf 12:39]

And His statement:

“Say: Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the All-Subduing.”

[Ar-Ra‘d 13:16]

What Does the Name of Allah “Al-Wahid” Mean?

The Name Al-Wahid — the One indicates Allah’s absolute uniqueness. He has no partner in His Lordship, His divinity, or the perfection of His Names and Attributes.

He alone is the Creator, Owner, and Controller of all affairs, and He alone deserves worship.

For this reason, this Name often appears in contexts that refute shirk and the claim of multiple gods. Yusuf (peace be upon him) said:

“Are many different lords better, or Allah, the One, the All-Subduing?”

[Yusuf 12:39]

The contrast here is between numerous supposed gods that possess nothing even for themselves and the One God who has subdued all creation.

What Does the Name of Allah “Al-Qahhar” Mean?

Al-Qahhar — the All-Subduing is the One before whom everything is humbled, who overcomes all created beings, and whose judgment and will prevail over them. No one can escape His dominion or authority.

No matter how much strength created beings possess, their strength remains limited. Some may overpower others, yet every created being is subject to weakness and disappearance.

Allah, however, is the Subduer who can never be subdued, while everything besides Him is created, governed, and subject to His authority.

Why Is “Al-Wahid” Paired With “Al-Qahhar”?

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa‘di (may Allah have mercy on him) explained that there is a close connection between Oneness and absolute dominion. He said:

“His Oneness and His absolute dominion are inseparable. The One can only be All-Subduing, and the All-Subduing can only be One. This negates any partnership with Him in every respect.”

The meaning is that absolute dominion over all existing things cannot belong to multiple equal gods. If there were two truly equal absolute subduers, neither would be able to subdue the other.

The One who subdues everything and whom nothing can subdue is therefore the One who has no equal or partner.

Al-Sa‘di also said:

“The One who subdues all things is the One who has no equal, and He alone deserves to be worshipped, just as He alone subdues all things.”

The Pairing of the Two Names Negates Shirk

When the two Names come together in the expression:

“The One, the All-Subduing”

they establish the reality of Tawhid from two perspectives:

“Al-Wahid” negates the existence of any partner or equal.

“Al-Qahhar” shows that everything besides Allah is subject to Him and subdued under His authority.

How, then, could a subdued created being be a partner to the All-Subduing Creator?

For this reason, the pairing of these two Names is among the strongest meanings for refuting the worship of anything besides Allah.

Allah Subdues Creation Without Needing Helpers

Human kings may overcome others through armies, supporters, wealth, and weapons. Their power, therefore, is not independent of external assistance.

Allah, however, subdues all creation while He is the One. He needs neither a helper nor an army to provide Him with strength.

It has been said in explaining the pairing of these Names that worldly kings achieve dominance through their supporters and armies, whereas Allah Almighty subdues all creation while He is the One and Only, completely independent of every supporter and helper.

Thus, the combination of these Names indicates the perfection of His uniqueness and the perfection of His power and absolute dominion.

All Created Beings Are Subdued, While Allah Alone Is the All-Subduing

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned an important meaning in this regard: Allah has placed within the world things that overpower one another.

Water extinguishes fire, fire melts iron, iron breaks stone, night succeeds day, day succeeds night, and created beings weaken and overcome one another.

No created being possesses absolute power to subdue, because every created being can itself be overcome by something else.

Whoever reflects upon this realizes that the absolute Subduer can only be One.

Ibn al-Qayyim said in explaining this meaning:

“The servant becomes certain that the All-Subduing can only be One and that it is impossible for Him to have a partner. Rather, absolute dominion and Oneness are inseparable.”

Absolute sovereignty, power, strength, and might belong to Allah alone, while everything besides Him is a subdued created being.

The Pairing of the Two Names Negates Any Need for a Child or Partner

Among the meanings mentioned by scholars of Tafsir is that describing Allah as the One, the All-Subduing is incompatible with any supposed need for a child or partner.

A human being may need others because of weakness and may desire a child to assist him or succeed him after death.

Allah, however, is never subject to incapacity, death, or weakness. Nothing can overpower Him; rather, He subdues all existing things.

For this reason, al-Razi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that Allah’s being Al-Qahhar negates any need for a child, because one who needs someone to succeed or assist him is, in some respect, needy and subject to limitation. Allah, however, is the Self-Sufficient, the All-Subduing, whom nothing can overcome.

Why Is “Al-Qahhar” Appropriate When Establishing Allah’s Exclusive Right to Worship?

If Allah alone is the Creator, Owner, and Subduer of everything, then He alone deserves worship.

This is clearly demonstrated in Yusuf’s statement:

“Are many different lords better, or Allah, the One, the All-Subduing?”

[Yusuf 12:39]

The created beings worshipped besides Allah are themselves subdued and dependent. They possess neither creation nor absolute sovereignty, nor can they independently protect themselves from harm.

Allah, however, is the One, the All-Subduing. Therefore, none besides Him deserves worship.

Conclusion

The pairing of Allah’s Names “Al-Wahid” and “Al-Qahhar” emphasizes the perfection of Tawhid, sovereignty, and power.

He is Al-Wahid, the One who has no partner or equal, and Al-Qahhar, the All-Subduing before whom everything is humbled and whom nothing can subdue.

For this reason, scholars have stated that Oneness and absolute dominion are inseparable. Absolute dominion over all existing things indicates that the true Subduer is One, just as perfect Oneness entails His uniqueness in sovereignty and authority.

The pairing of these two Names also refutes shirk, demonstrates Allah’s complete independence from any child, partner, or helper, and confirms that everything besides Him is a created and subdued servant under His Lordship, while worship belongs only to Allah, the One, the All-Subduing.

And Allah knows best.
