The Ruling on Not Knowing the Conditions of "There Is No Deity Worthy of Worship Except Allah"

Question
Is Every Muslim Required to Know the Conditions of "There Is No Deity Worthy of Worship Except Allah"? Does Ignorance of Them Constitute Disbelief?
Answer

All praise is due to Allah, and may Allah's peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

A Muslim benefits from the statement of Tawhid ("There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah") when he understands its meaning, believes in it, and acts according to its implications. Merely pronouncing it without understanding its meaning or acting upon it does not benefit a person.

It is not obligatory for every Muslim to memorize the conditions of "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah" or to know them by their technical names and detailed classifications. Nor does a Muslim become a disbeliever simply because he is unaware of these conditions, as long as he believes in their meaning, is sincere to Allah, obeys Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and practices the teachings of Islam according to the knowledge and ability that Allah has granted him.

For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ did not teach new Muslims these conditions in the technical form later developed by scholars. Rather, he called them to faith and righteous deeds.

It is therefore possible that an ordinary Muslim may not know the names of the conditions, yet fulfills them in practice, while another person may memorize all of them but fail to act according to their requirements.

As for learning these conditions and teaching them to others, this is a collective obligation (Fard Kifayah). The Muslim community must always have people who learn them, explain them, and clarify them for others. This responsibility is even greater for scholars, callers to Islam (du'at), and muftis. As for the general Muslims, they are only required to acquire the knowledge necessary to ensure the soundness of their creed and worship.

And Allah knows best.
