Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
“Al-‘Aziz” is one of the Most Beautiful Names of Allah. He سبحانه possesses perfect ‘izzah, which encompasses the ‘izzah of strength, the ‘izzah of dominance and irresistible power, and the ‘izzah of being beyond reach. He is the Strong One who cannot be overcome, the Dominant One who cannot be subdued, and the One completely independent of His creation, whom no one can harm or overpower.
The Name Al-‘Aziz occurs in many places in the Noble Qur’an, often paired with other Names that indicate His perfection. Among these are His words تعالى:
﴿Indeed, your Lord is the Strong, the Almighty.﴾ [Hud: 66]
And He سبحانه says:
﴿Indeed, your Lord is certainly the Almighty, the Most Merciful.﴾ [Ash-Shu‘ara’: 9]
And Allah تعالى says:
﴿Rather, He is Allah, the Almighty, the All-Wise.﴾ [Saba’: 27]
And He سبحانه says:
﴿And the sun runs its course toward its appointed destination. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.﴾ [Ya-Sin: 38]
And He عز وجل says:
﴿He is the One who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, the Most Forgiving.﴾ [Al-Mulk: 2]
In the Arabic language, Al-‘Aziz refers to the strong, mighty, dominant one who cannot be overcome.
The scholars have explained that the ‘izzah with which Allah تعالى describes Himself encompasses three great meanings, all of which belong to Him سبحانه in the most perfect manner:
This means that Allah سبحانه is beyond the ability of His enemies to harm Him or attain what they seek against Him. No one can harm Him or overpower Him.
Allah تعالى says in the hadith qudsi:
“O My servants, you can never reach a point where you can harm Me, nor can you reach a point where you can benefit Me.”
Narrated by Muslim (2577).
Allah سبحانه is completely independent of all His creation, while all creation is in need of Him.
This means that He سبحانه is the Dominant One above His servants, the One who prevails and can never be overcome. All creation is under His power and authority, and nothing among them falls outside His will and power.
Allah تعالى says:
﴿And He is the Dominant over His servants, and He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.﴾ [Al-An‘am: 18]
No one can oppose Allah’s command or escape His power and authority.
This means that Allah سبحانه is perfect in strength and power, and His strength is never affected by weakness or inability.
Allah تعالى says:
﴿Indeed, Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm.﴾ [Adh-Dhariyat: 58]
His strength is not like the strength of created beings. Rather, it is complete and absolute strength befitting His majesty and greatness.
The Name “Al-‘Aziz” indicates the perfection of Allah’s ‘izzah from every aspect:
He is Al-‘Aziz through His strength, and nothing can render Him incapable.
He is Al-‘Aziz through His dominance and victory, and no one can overcome Him.
He is Al-‘Aziz through being beyond reach, and no one can harm Him or attain anything against Him.
For this reason, Shaykh As-Sa‘di رحمه الله said regarding the meaning of Al-‘Aziz that He possesses all forms of ‘izzah: the ‘izzah of strength, the ‘izzah of dominance, and the ‘izzah of being beyond reach.
Part of the perfection of His ‘izzah is that He is independent of His creation, while all creation is dependent upon Him. No one possesses the ability to bring benefit or harm to himself except by what Allah wills.
Knowing this great Name is not merely a matter of understanding its linguistic meaning. It should affect the Muslim’s heart and conduct.
When a Muslim knows that Allah is Al-‘Aziz, the One who can never be overcome, he attaches his heart to Him, fears Him, hopes in Him, and does not humble his heart before a created being regarding something that only Allah has the power to grant.
And when he knows that all ‘izzah belongs to Allah, he does not seek honor through disobedience to Him. Rather, he seeks it through obedience to Him. Allah تعالى says:
﴿Whoever desires honor and might, then to Allah belongs all honor and might.﴾ [Fatir: 10]
The servant does not attain true honor by disobeying Allah. Rather, his true honor lies in being a devoted servant of Allah and following His command.
The Name of Allah “Al-‘Aziz” indicates the perfection of Allah’s ‘izzah تعالى, which includes:
The ‘izzah of being beyond reach: no one can harm Him or overpower Him.
The ‘izzah of dominance and victory: He is the Dominant and Victorious One who can never be overcome.
The ‘izzah of strength: He سبحانه possesses perfect strength and power, and nothing can render Him incapable.
All of these meanings are established for Allah تعالى in the most perfect manner, without comparing His ‘izzah to the ‘izzah of created beings.
