Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:
The angels’ question was neither an objection to Allah nor a challenge to His wisdom. Rather, they were asking about the wisdom behind creating beings some of whom would cause corruption and shed blood. Allah answered: “Indeed, I know that which you do not know.” He then showed them some of the qualities of Adam and his descendants that had been hidden from them, including the knowledge with which He specially endowed Adam, and the fact that among his descendants would be prophets, righteous people, those who repent, and people devoted to obedience.
The Angels’ Question Was a Request to Understand the Wisdom
Allah Almighty says:
“And when your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed, I am placing a successor on earth,’ they said, ‘Will You place in it those who will cause corruption and shed blood, while we glorify You with praise and sanctify You?’ He said, ‘Indeed, I know that which you do not know.’”
[Al-Baqarah: 30]
The angels are honored servants. Allah says concerning them:
﴿لَا يَسْبِقُونَهُ بِالْقَوْلِ وَهُمْ بِأَمْرِهِ يَعْمَلُونَ﴾
“They do not precede Him in speech, and they act by His command.”
[Al-Anbiya: 27]
Therefore, their question was not an objection to Allah’s judgment. Rather, it was a question seeking to understand the wisdom: What is the wisdom behind creating a race among whose members some would cause corruption and shed blood, while the angels glorify and sanctify Allah?
Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, explained that their question was neither an objection nor envy toward the children of Adam, but rather a request to understand the wisdom.
What Does “Indeed, I Know That Which You Do Not Know” Mean?
The angels’ knowledge was limited to what Allah had taught them.
Therefore, they later said:
﴿سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ﴾
“Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You alone are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.”
[Al-Baqarah: 32]
Allah knew the wisdom and benefits connected with the creation of Adam and his descendants that the angels did not know.
Among these was that not all human beings would be people of corruption. From among them would come prophets, messengers, the truthful, martyrs, righteous people, scholars, and devoted worshippers. Some would sin and then repent and return to Allah.
What Was the Point of Teaching Adam the Names?
Allah Almighty says:
“And He taught Adam the names—all of them. Then He presented them to the angels and said, ‘Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true.’ They replied, ‘Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You alone are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.’”
[Al-Baqarah: 31–32]
Teaching Adam the names showed the angels one aspect of the wisdom behind his creation: the capacity for knowledge and learning that Allah had placed within him.
It cannot be said that this was no distinction for Adam merely because Allah was the One who taught him, for all knowledge possessed by creation ultimately comes from Allah.
Allah says:
“They encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills.”
[Al-Baqarah: 255]
The fact that Allah granted human beings knowledge does not negate the virtue of possessing knowledge. Rather, it demonstrates that Allah specially favored them with this blessing.
Allah says:
“Say: Are those who know equal to those who do not know?”
[Az-Zumar: 9]
The original text also explained that saying, “Had Allah willed, He could have taught the angels,” is true in itself. However, this does not change the fact that Allah chose Adam and granted him knowledge that the angels did not possess at that moment.
The Purpose Was Not to Prove, Through This Incident Alone, That Adam Was Superior to All the Angels
The story is not primarily a debate intended to prove whether Adam is superior to the angels or vice versa. Rather, it demonstrates Allah’s wisdom in creating humankind and that Allah’s knowledge encompasses the benefits and wisdom that would result from their creation, whereas the angels did not know them.
Thus, the fundamental answer was:
﴿إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ﴾
“Indeed, I know that which you do not know.”
The events that followed then revealed some of what had previously been hidden from them.
Not Everything That Existed Before Adam Was Free From Disobedience
Another matter that later became apparent is that disobedience and arrogance were not limited to Adam’s descendants.
Iblis existed before Adam’s descendants spread throughout the earth. Yet when Allah commanded him to prostrate to Adam, he refused and became arrogant, saying:
﴿أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِنْ نَارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِنْ طِينٍ﴾
“I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.”
[Al-A‘raf: 12]
Allah knew the arrogance within Iblis and the disobedience that would come from him, while the angels did not know this. A number of the early Muslim scholars are reported to have interpreted Allah’s statement, “Indeed, I know that which you do not know,” as referring to what Allah knew concerning Iblis, his arrogance, and his disobedience.
There Is Immense Good Among Adam’s Descendants Alongside the Occurrence of Sin
Although human beings may cause corruption and shed blood, prophets, righteous people, martyrs, and devoted worshippers have also come from among them.
Another distinctive feature of human beings is repentance after sin.
Adam, peace be upon him, ate from the tree, but he regretted his action and repented to his Lord. He and his wife said:
﴿رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ﴾
“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will certainly be among the losers.”
[Al-A‘raf: 23]
Allah then said concerning him:
﴿ثُمَّ اجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ وَهَدَى﴾
“Then his Lord chose him, accepted his repentance, and guided him.”
[Ta-Ha: 122]
Part of the wisdom that was not apparent to the angels was that this human race, despite its capacity for disobedience, can choose obedience, repent after sin, and attain lofty ranks of faith and worship.
Are the Angels Superior Because They Do Not Disobey Allah?
The angels are created to obey Allah. Allah says:
“They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, and they do what they are commanded.”
[At-Tahrim: 6]
Human beings, however, were created with desires, motives, and the ability to choose, and Allah then commanded them to obey and prohibited them from sin.
Therefore, the wisdom cannot be reduced merely to the fact that angels do not disobey whereas some humans do. Allah willed to create a race that would be tested through choice, worship Him despite the presence of motives toward disobedience, and repent when they err.
Adam, Peace Be Upon Him, Was Not Among Those Who Caused Corruption on Earth
It should also be emphasized that Adam himself was not among those who caused corruption on earth or shed blood.
Allah Almighty says:
“Indeed, Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of ‘Imran above all people.”
[Aal ‘Imran: 33]
Adam’s sin of eating from the tree occurred before his descent to earth. Allah then accepted his repentance, chose him, and guided him.
Therefore, Adam, peace be upon him, should not be placed in the same category as those among his descendants who committed crimes and corruption. He was an honored and chosen prophet whose repentance Allah accepted.
Conclusion
The angels’ question was not an objection to Allah. Rather, it was a question about the wisdom behind creating human beings among whom corruption and bloodshed would occur.
Allah answered:
“Indeed, I know that which you do not know.”
He then showed them part of that wisdom by teaching Adam the names, demonstrating that this creature possessed abilities and qualities that had not been apparent to them.
Moreover, Adam’s descendants would not consist only of corrupt people and sinners. Among them would be prophets, righteous people, martyrs, repentant believers, scholars, and devoted worshippers.
The entire account therefore affirms the perfection of Allah’s knowledge and wisdom, and the limitation of created beings’ knowledge—regardless of their lofty status—regarding anything Allah has not taught them.
And Allah knows best.
