Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.
The expression “How is Allah today?” is inappropriate when speaking about Allah تعالى, and it should not be used. It is ambiguous, and this wording is not known as an expression used by scholars. Most likely, the intended meaning is another question, such as “How is your relationship with Allah today?” Or the intended meaning of “state” may be Allah’s affairs and His management of the affairs of His creation. In that case, it should be expressed using clear and safe wording.
The statement “How is Allah today?” may imply asking about a state that occurs to Allah تعالى or changes in Him. This is not an appropriate way to speak about Allah سبحانه وتعالى, His names, attributes, or actions.
Therefore, anyone writing for people, especially regarding matters of creed, should avoid ambiguous expressions and choose clear wording that is consistent with the language used by scholars.
It may also be that the expression was written incorrectly and that what was intended was:
“How is your relationship with Allah today?”
This is a completely different question, because it asks a person about their relationship with their Lord in terms of obedience, repentance, and worship.
If the intended meaning is related to the statement of Allah تعالى:
“Every day He is bringing about a matter.” [Ar-Rahman: 29]
then the meaning is correct in principle, but it should be expressed in wording clearer than saying: “How is Allah?”
Allah تعالى is every day bringing about matters concerning His creation, doing what He wills according to His wisdom and decree.
Al-Bukhari reported in a تعليق from Abu ad-Darda’ رضي الله عنه, in explanation of the verse:
“He forgives a sin, relieves a hardship, raises some people, and lowers others.”
And it has been reported in a marfu‘ hadith from Abu ad-Darda’ رضي الله عنه:
“Among His affairs is that He forgives a sin, relieves a hardship, raises some people, and lowers others.”
Al-Busiri and al-Albani regarded it as hasan.
The scholars have mentioned a number of affairs that Allah تعالى brings about among His creation, including:
Forgiving a sin.
Relieving a hardship.
Answering someone who supplicates.
Giving to one who asks.
Healing the sick.
Raising some people and lowering others.
Giving life and causing death.
Providing and withholding.
Honoring and humbling.
Supporting the oppressed.
Managing the affairs of His creation as He wills.
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله explained the meaning of the verse by mentioning among the affairs of Allah تعالى that He forgives a sin, relieves a hardship, heals the sick, frees a captive, supports the oppressed, assists the distressed, restores what is broken, enriches the poor, answers a supplication, gives life and causes death, lowers and raises, gives and withholds, and other matters of Lordship and divine management.
The intended meaning is not that Allah تعالى undergoes changes in His attributes, or that some deficiency or new state occurs to Him that was not previously present. Exalted is Allah above that. Rather, the meaning concerns His actions and His management of His creation in a manner befitting His majesty.
Care should be taken when speaking about Allah تعالى to avoid expressions that could carry incorrect meanings or imply something that is not befitting of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
Not every expression that can be used when speaking about human beings is appropriate when speaking about Allah تعالى, especially when the expression is not transmitted from the religious texts or could carry an incorrect meaning.
Therefore, it is preferable to say, for example:
“What are the affairs of Allah تعالى concerning His creation?”
Or:
“What is the meaning of Allah تعالى’s statement: ‘Every day He is bringing about a matter’?”
Or:
“What does Allah تعالى do with His creation each day?”
These expressions are clearer and further removed from ambiguity.
One should not say: “How is Allah today?” because this expression is ambiguous and unsafe when speaking about Allah تعالى.
If the intended meaning is to ask a person about their relationship with their Lord, the correct wording would be:
“How is your relationship with Allah today?”
If the intended meaning is what Allah has informed us about Himself:
“Every day He is bringing about a matter,”
then the meaning is that Allah تعالى manages the affairs of His creation: He forgives, gives and withholds, relieves hardship, answers supplications, raises and lowers, gives life and causes death, and does whatever He wills with His wisdom and power.
The best approach in matters of creed is always to use clear and safe expressions and avoid unusual or ambiguous wording.
