Death in Islam

Question
Can the Dead Return to Life After Being Buried? And How Authentic Are the Stories and Books That Claim Some Dead People Returned to This World?
Answer

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.

The fundamental principle established by the Qur'an and the Sunnah is that whoever dies a true and complete death does not return to worldly life again. Allah has appointed a fixed term for every human being, and when that term comes to an end, the person enters the Barzakh (the intermediate life after death) and does not return to this world until the Day of Resurrection. Allah says:

"It is impossible for any town that We have destroyed to return." (Qur'an 21:95)

And He also says:

"Allah will never delay a soul when its appointed time has come." (Qur'an 63:11)

This principle is also supported by the hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him and his father). In it, Allah brought the father of Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) back to life after he was martyred. When he wished to return to this world so that he could be martyred once again for the sake of Allah, Allah informed him that His decree had already been established: no one returns to worldly life after true death.

As for the stories that circulate about people who supposedly died and then returned to life after several hours or days, they should not be taken as evidence that a truly dead person returned to life. In many of these cases, there is only a temporary cessation of certain vital signs, or people mistakenly believe that the person has died when, in reality, they have not experienced true biological death. Later, the person regains consciousness or recovers. Human beings cannot establish with certainty that someone experienced complete death and then returned to worldly life. At most, such reports are based on assumptions or unverified claims.

As for the cases mentioned in the Qur'an in which certain dead people were brought back to life—such as the people whom Allah caused to die and then revived, the man whom Allah caused to die for one hundred years, or the murdered man from the Children of Israel—these were unique miracles and signs performed by Allah for specific wisdoms. They cannot be used as a basis for judging ordinary events or as a general rule applicable in every age.

Regarding the book "Those Who Lived After Death" by Imam Ibn Abi al-Dunya, its title may give the impression that dead people return to life, but most of its contents do not support such a conclusion. Many of the narrations describe people who spoke before their death had fully occurred or after recovering from deep unconsciousness. In addition, some reports in the book have weak chains of transmission. It was common practice among some hadith scholars to compile narrations together with their chains of transmission without necessarily declaring the authenticity or weakness of every individual narration.

In summary: The general rule is that whoever experiences true and complete death does not return to worldly life. Contemporary stories do not establish otherwise, and most of them can be explained by an incorrect diagnosis of death or by situations in which complete death had not actually occurred. The instances of the dead being brought back to life mentioned in the Qur'an were extraordinary miracles revealed by Allah and cannot be used as a basis for judging ordinary events.

And Allah knows best.
