Are the Palm and Fingertips Among Allah’s Attributes? Evidence from the Sunnah and the Statements of Ahl al-Sunna

Question
Are the palm and fingertips among the attributes of Allah Almighty? What is the evidence for this from the Qur’an and Sunnah? Does the fact that these attributes are not mentioned on some well-known websites or in some popular books mean that affirming them is doubtful or disputed?
Answer

All praise is due to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

The palm, fingers, and fingertips are among the revealed intrinsic attributes indicated by authentic Sunnah. Ahl al-Sunnah affirm them for Allah Almighty in a manner befitting His Majesty, without likening Him to creation, drawing comparisons, or denying the attributes, while believing that no one knows the manner of these attributes except Allah Almighty.

First: Affirming the Palm for Allah Almighty

The attribute of the palm is mentioned in the authentic hadith narrated from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, in which the Prophet ﷺ said:

“No one gives charity from what is good—and Allah accepts only what is good—except that the Most Merciful takes it with His right hand. Even if it is a date, it grows in the palm of the Most Merciful until it becomes greater than a mountain, just as one of you raises his foal or young camel.”

Narrated by Muslim (1014).

Thus, the hadith affirms the palm for Allah Almighty and attributes it to the Most Merciful. This is among the texts through which Ahl al-Sunnah affirm Allah’s attributes.

Affirming the palm does not imply that it resembles the palm of a created being, for Allah says:

“There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.” [Ash-Shura 42:11]

Second: Affirming the Fingers for Allah Almighty

The attribute of fingers is established in authentic hadiths. Among them is the hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with them both, in which the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Indeed, all the hearts of the children of Adam are between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful, like one heart; He turns them however He wills.”

Narrated by Muslim (2654).

This is a clear text affirming fingers for Allah Almighty.

Imam Ibn Khuzaymah, may Allah have mercy on him, entitled a chapter in his book Al-Tawhid:

“Chapter on Affirming the Fingers for Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”

He then cited the hadiths concerning this matter.

Al-Baghawi, may Allah have mercy on him, said that the finger mentioned in the hadith is an attribute of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and that what is mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah in this regard is affirmed for Allah as it has been transmitted.

Third: Affirming the Fingertips

The fingertips are mentioned in the hadith of Mu‘adh ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him, known as the hadith concerning the dispute of the highest assembly.

In it, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“I saw Him place His palm between my shoulders until I felt the coolness of His fingertips between my breasts, whereupon everything became clear to me and I knew.”

Narrated by Ahmad (22109) and al-Tirmidhi (3235). Al-Tirmidhi said:

“This is a hasan sahih hadith.”

The fingertips are the ends of the fingers.

Thus, the hadith combines mention of the palm and the fingertips, indicating that both are affirmed in a manner befitting Allah Almighty.

Fourth: Affirming These Attributes Does Not Mean Likening Allah to Creation

It is important to distinguish between affirming an attribute and likening it to the attributes of created beings.

We affirm for Allah the palm, fingers, and fingertips as they are mentioned in the revealed texts, but we do not say that they are like a human palm or human fingers, nor do we know the manner of these attributes.

Qawam al-Sunnah al-Isfahani, may Allah have mercy on him, explained that these attributes are known insofar as the texts mentioning them are known and their meanings are understood in the Arabic language, while their manner is unknown.

This is the fundamental principle concerning all of Allah’s attributes: we affirm them as they have come, believe in them, and do not delve into how Allah possesses them.

Allah says:

“There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.” [Ash-Shura 42:11]

The text combines denial of resemblance with affirmation of the attributes.

Fifth: Does the Small Number of Websites Mentioning These Attributes Mean They Are Doubtful?

The failure of some websites or books to mention these attributes does not mean that they are invalid or that affirming them is merely an anomalous opinion. What matters is the evidence and authenticity of the text, not how many websites mention the issue.

A number of imams of Ahl al-Sunnah explicitly affirmed the fingers and the palm, including Ibn Khuzaymah, al-Baghawi, Qawam al-Sunnah al-Isfahani, and others.

The hadiths concerning them are also found in authentic collections of Sunnah, including Sahih Muslim.

Therefore, when what one reads on websites differs, one should refer to the original texts and the statements of recognized scholars, rather than merely counting search-engine results.

Sixth: Is Simply Not Knowing the Issue Considered Doubt?

If a Muslim did not know about this issue before, or did not find a clear answer regarding it, this is ignorance of the particular issue, not doubt about the religion.

When one does not know, one should ask people of knowledge and then accept what is established by authentic evidence.

Blameworthy doubt is when a person rejects the truth after it has become clear to him or hesitates about it without a valid reason.

As for someone simply saying:

“I did not know that the palm and fingertips are among the attributes, and I want to know the evidence,”

this is a question seeking knowledge, not a sin or an attack on the creed.

Conclusion

The palm, fingers, and fingertips are among the revealed attributes of Allah Almighty established by authentic Sunnah. They are to be affirmed for Allah in a manner befitting His Majesty, without likening, comparison, denial, or defining their manner.

The palm is established in the hadith: “It grows in the palm of the Most Merciful”; the fingers are established in the hadith: “between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful”; and the fingertips are established in the hadith: “until I felt the coolness of His fingertips.”

As for the manner and true reality of these attributes in a way befitting Allah Almighty, we do not know them, nor do we measure them by the attributes of created beings.

And Allah knows best
