The Blessed Family from Which Jesus (Peace Be Upon Him) Came

The Blessed Family from Which Jesus (Peace Be Upon Him) Came

The story of Jesus, known in Arabic as عيسى بن مريم, is one of the greatest stories mentioned in the Quran. It is not merely the story of a prophet born through a miraculous event, but also the story of a blessed family chosen by God to play a role in one of the most remarkable chapters in the history of divine revelation.

The Quran shows that God often chooses families known for their faith, righteousness, and devotion to carry His message. The family of Imran, known as Aal Imran, was one of these blessed families.

Through this story, we learn that sincere faith, patience, and devotion can lead to extraordinary events that shape history.

The Chosen Family of Imran

The Quran mentions this blessed family alongside the families of great prophets. God says:
“Indeed, God chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of Imran above all people.”
The mention of the family of Imran among such great figures highlights the importance and honor of this household. From this family came righteous people and prophets who played significant roles in guiding humanity.
The story begins with a righteous man named Imran and his faithful wife.

The Prayer of Mary’s Mother

The wife of Imran was a righteous and devoted woman known in Islamic tradition as Hannah (Hanna bint Fāqūdh).
For many years she longed to have a child. One day, filled with sincere faith, she raised her hands to God and made a remarkable vow: if God granted her a child, she would dedicate that child entirely to the worship and service of God in the sacred temple.
The Quran describes her prayer:
“When the wife of Imran said: My Lord, I have vowed to You what is in my womb, dedicated to Your service, so accept it from me. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
She did not know that this prayer would become the beginning of a story remembered for centuries.

The Birth of Mary

When the child was born, she discovered that the baby was a girl, not a boy as she had expected.
She said:
“My Lord, I have given birth to a female.”
Despite her surprise, she remained faithful to her promise. She named the child Mary, known in Arabic as مريم بنت عمران, and prayed that God would protect her and her descendants from Satan.
She said:
“I have named her Mary, and I seek Your protection for her and her offspring from Satan, the rejected.”
God accepted this sincere prayer and granted Mary a blessed upbringing.

Mary’s Upbringing in the Sacred Sanctuary

Mary grew up in the sanctuary in Jerusalem and was placed under the care of the prophet Zechariah, known in Arabic as زكريا.
The Quran states:
“And Zechariah became her guardian.”
Whenever Zechariah entered Mary’s place of worship, he would find food with her that no one had brought.
The Quran says:
“Whenever Zechariah entered upon her in the sanctuary, he found provisions with her.”
Surprised, he would ask:
“O Mary, where did this come from?”
She would answer with full faith:
“It is from God.”
According to some early scholars such as Abd Allah ibn Abbas, the provisions she received were fruits of summer during winter and fruits of winter during summer, showing that God was caring for her in a miraculous way.

The Prayer of Zechariah

When the prophet Zechariah witnessed the miraculous provisions given to Mary, his faith in God’s power grew even stronger.
At that moment, he prayed to God and said:
“My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of prayer.”
Although Zechariah was already very old and his wife could not bear children, he trusted in God’s unlimited power.
God answered his prayer, and the angels brought him good news that he would have a son named John the Baptist, known in Arabic as يحيى بن زكريا.
This child would later become a righteous prophet.

The Selection of Mary

Mary grew in devotion, purity, and faith until God honored her with a special status.
The Quran says:
“O Mary, indeed God has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you above the women of all worlds.”
This divine selection prepared her for an extraordinary event that would soon follow.

The Announcement of a Miracle

God sent the angel Gabriel to bring Mary astonishing news: she would give birth to a blessed child without a father.
Mary was surprised and said:
“How can I have a son when no man has touched me?”
The angel replied that this would happen by God’s command.
“Thus God creates what He wills.”

The Birth of Jesus

Mary gave birth to Jesus, known in Arabic as عيسى بن مريم, through a miraculous act of God without a father.
The Quran explains:
“Indeed, the example of Jesus in the sight of God is like that of Adam.”
Just as God created Adam without a father or mother, He created Jesus without a father.
This miraculous birth became a powerful sign of God’s unlimited power.

A Family Filled with Faith

When we look at this family, we find a remarkable household filled with faith and righteousness:
  • A righteous woman: the mother of Mary
  • A pure and chosen woman: Mary
  • A noble prophet: Zechariah
  • A righteous prophet: John the Baptist
  • A great prophet: Jesus
This shows that sincere faith and devotion can shape families that influence history.

Conclusion

The story of the blessed family from which Jesus came reminds us that God chooses homes filled with faith and righteousness to carry His message.

The story began with the sincere prayer of a righteous woman, continued with the upbringing of a pure and devoted young woman, and culminated in the miraculous birth of one of God’s greatest prophets.

Thus, the family of Imran remains an enduring example in the Quran of a faithful household chosen by God to become part of one of the most powerful stories of faith in human history.
