Have the Qur’an and Gospel Been Preserved?

Have the Qur’an and Gospel Been Preserved?

Introduction

One of the most important questions asked by sincere seekers of truth is:
Have the revealed scriptures that we possess today remained exactly as they were originally revealed?

This is not merely a theoretical discussion—it is a fundamental issue. The authenticity of a religious text determines the validity of the beliefs built upon it. If a scripture is preserved, it serves as a reliable source of truth. If not, then attributing its content to God becomes questionable.

In this article, we will compare the Qur’an and the Gospel in terms of preservation, using historical evidence and scriptural references, in a clear and thoughtful way.

First: The Concept of Preserving Divine Scriptures

In Islam, belief in divine scriptures is a core part of faith. This includes:
  • The Torah
  • The Gospel
  • The Psalms
  • The Qur’an
However, Islam distinguishes between:
  • The original revelation sent by God
  • The texts as they exist today
The Qur’an is considered fully preserved, while previous scriptures are believed to have undergone changes over time.

Second: The Preservation of the Qur’an

A Divine Promise of Preservation
The Qur’an stands out with a unique feature: a clear and explicit divine promise of preservation:
“Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (Qur’an 15:9)
This is a direct assurance not found in the same form for other scriptures.
Oral Preservation
From the time of its revelation:
  • The companions memorized the Qur’an بالكامل
  • It was transmitted across generations through continuous memorization
  • Today, millions of people around the world have memorized it entirely
This makes:
  • Any alteration practically impossible

Written Preservation

  • The Qur’an was written during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
  • It was compiled into a single manuscript during the caliphate of Abu Bakr
  • Standardized copies were distributed during the caliphate of Uthman
Until today:
  • The same text is recited worldwide
  • There is a unified version of the Qur’an

Historical Evidence

Ancient manuscripts (such as early Qur’anic manuscripts discovered in places like Sana’a) show a remarkable consistency with the text used today, confirming the stability of the Qur’an from the earliest centuries.

Third: The State of the Gospel in Terms of Preservation

Is the Current Gospel the Original Revelation?

In Islamic belief:
  • The original Gospel was revealed to Jesus (peace be upon him)
  • However, it has not been preserved in its original form

Multiple Gospels

Today, there is not a single Gospel, but several:
  • The Gospel of Matthew
  • The Gospel of Mark
  • The Gospel of Luke
  • The Gospel of John
These texts:
  • Were written after the time of Jesus
  • Were not originally written in the exact spoken language of Jesus (likely Aramaic)

Lack of Continuous Chain of Transmission

Unlike the Qur’an:
  • There is no continuous, verified chain of memorization preserving every word
  • Transmission occurred through multiple authors and written accounts

Fourth: What Does the Qur’an Say About Changes in Previous Scriptures?

The Qur’an indicates that alterations occurred in earlier texts:
“They distort words from their proper places.” (Qur’an 4:46)
“Woe to those who write the scripture with their own hands and then say, ‘This is from God.’” (Qur’an 2:79)
This does not mean that everything in the Gospel is false. Rather:
  • It may contain remnants of the original revelation
  • Alongside elements that were altered or added

Fifth: A Direct Comparison Between the Qur’an and the Gospel

Aspect The Qur’an The Gospel
Divine Preservation Explicit promise of preservation No equivalent explicit promise
Language Preserved in its original language (Arabic) Multiple translations
Transmission Oral and written mass transmission (tawatur) Primarily written transmission
Versions One unified global text Multiple versions

Sixth: A Simple Logical Reflection

If a book is truly from God:
  • It would be reasonable to expect its preservation
  • Since God has the power to preserve His message
If we find:
  • One text preserved with remarkable precision
  • Another transmitted through varied processes
Then a natural question arises:
Which one is more likely to have remained as originally revealed?

Seventh: Why Were Previous Scriptures Not Preserved in the Same Way?

From an Islamic perspective:
  • Earlier revelations were sent to specific communities and for limited periods
  • Therefore, they were not preserved in the same comprehensive way
In contrast, the Qur’an:
  • Is a universal message for all humanity
  • Thus, its preservation is part of divine wisdom

Eighth: Does This Mean Rejecting the Gospel Entirely?

No. Islam teaches that:
  • The original Gospel was a true revelation from God
However:
  • The current form is not identical in every aspect to the original
Therefore:
  • What aligns with the Qur’an is accepted
  • What contradicts it is reconsidered

Conclusion

So, have the scriptures been preserved as they were revealed?

Based on the available evidence:

  • The Qur’an stands out with a unique and consistent preservation

  • The Gospel, as it exists today, reflects a more complex history of transmission

This is not a call to argument, but an invitation to sincere reflection.
Truth does not fear questions—it welcomes them.

In the end, the Qur’an remains a book that has endured through time, preserved as it was revealed, and continues to invite those who seek certainty.
