Why Are There Many Religions If God Is One?
Why Are There Many Religions If God Is One?
Introduction
Many people ask an important question: if God is one—the Creator of the entire universe—why are there so many different religions in the world? Can all of them be true at the same time?
This question is not only religious; it is also philosophical and rational, because it relates to the nature of truth itself. Islam offers a clear and logical answer to this question by explaining the nature of divine revelation and the history of the messages sent by God.
In this article, we will explore this issue from an Islamic perspective based on the Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, while also considering it from a rational point of view.
First: The Unity of the Creator Means Unity of the Message
When we observe the universe around us, we see that it operates according to one consistent system and fixed laws. The laws of physics are the same everywhere, and the laws of nature do not change from one country to another.
This harmony suggests that the universe has one Creator who designed it with wisdom and order.
If the Creator is one, then logically His message to humanity should also be one in its essence, because truth cannot contradict itself.
The Qur’an states:
“Indeed, the religion in the sight of God is Islam.”
(Qur’an 3:19)
Here, the word Islam does not merely refer to the name of a religion today, but to the idea of submission to God alone, which was the core message of all prophets.
Second: All Prophets Called to the Same Faith
When we study the messages of the prophets mentioned in the Qur’an, we find that their central call was the same: to worship God alone and abandon the worship of anything else.
God says:
“And We did not send any messenger before you except that We revealed to him: ‘There is no deity except Me, so worship Me.’”
(Qur’an 21:25)
Prophets such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad—peace be upon them all—shared the same fundamental message: monotheism.
This means that the differences between religions did not originate from the prophets themselves, but from what happened after their time.
Third: Why Do Different Religions Exist?
Islam explains this issue clearly. God sent many prophets throughout history to guide humanity. However, over time some communities altered or changed parts of the original teachings.
The Qur’an says:
“So woe to those who write the Scripture with their own hands and then say, ‘This is from God.’”
(Qur’an 2:79)
As centuries passed, human ideas and interpretations became mixed with the original teachings of the prophets. As a result, different beliefs and doctrines emerged.
Fourth: Islam Is Not a New Religion
One important concept in Islam is that Islam did not begin only with the Prophet Muhammad. Rather, Islam represents the continuation of the original message of all prophets.
The Qur’an mentions that Abraham himself was a Muslim in the sense that he submitted to God.
God says:
“Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a man of pure faith, submitting to God.”
(Qur’an 3:67)
This means that he worshiped God alone and followed the path of monotheism.
Fifth: Why Do Muslims Believe Islam Is the True Religion?
There are several reasons why Muslims believe that Islam preserves the original message of the prophets.
- Preservation of the Qur’an
The Qur’an is the only major religious scripture that has remained preserved in its original form since it was revealed.
God says:
“Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder, and surely We will preserve it.”
(Qur’an 15:9)
The Qur’an has been preserved through both written manuscripts and memorization by millions of people throughout history.
- Simplicity of Belief
The belief system in Islam is simple and clear:
- God is One
- He has no partners
- He was not born and does not give birth
- Nothing is comparable to Him
This understanding aligns naturally with human reason and instinct.
- Belief in All Prophets
Islam does not reject the earlier prophets; rather, it affirms and honors them all.
The Qur’an says:
“We make no distinction between any of His messengers.”
A Muslim therefore believes in prophets such as Moses, Jesus, Abraham, and others.
Sixth: One Message for Humanity
From the Islamic perspective, the divine message has always been the same:
-
Worship God alone
-
Establish justice among people
-
Live with good morals
-
Believe in accountability in the afterlife
However, as time passed, some teachings were altered. Islam came to reaffirm and restore the original message.
The Qur’an says:
“We have sent you to all mankind as a bearer of good news and a warner.”
(Qur’an 34:28)
Conclusion
The question remains: If God is one, why are there many religions?
Islam answers that God sent one consistent message through many prophets throughout history. Over time, parts of these messages were altered or misunderstood. Islam came to reaffirm the original call: worship God alone without partners.
For this reason, Muslims believe that Islam is not a new religion but rather the continuation and restoration of the original message of monotheism brought by all prophets throughout history.
